Great Stirrup Cay

Great Stirrup Cay: Norwegian’s Transformed Private Island Is Worth the Hype

Norwegian Cruise Line has been running private island experiences since 1977 — they were literally the first cruise line to do it. For decades, Great Stirrup Cay was a beloved but fairly traditional beach stop. Nice beaches, good snorkeling, solid day out.

That era is over.

Norwegian has invested approximately $150 million into a complete transformation of Great Stirrup Cay, and what’s emerging is one of the most ambitious private island projects in the cruise industry. New pier. Massive heated pool complex. Adults-only beach club. Hammock bay. And a 19-slide waterpark opening September 4, 2026 that’s already generating serious buzz.

As a cruise travel agent based in Central Florida who books Norwegian sailings regularly, here’s the complete current guide to Great Stirrup Cay — what’s there now, what’s coming, and whether it’s worth building your itinerary around.

A note on timing: Great Stirrup Cay is in the middle of a phased expansion. This guide reflects what’s open as of mid-2026, with the Great Tides Waterpark opening September 4, 2026. Always check with Norwegian Cruise Line or your travel agent for the latest.

What Is Great Stirrup Cay?

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line’s exclusive private island in the Berry Islands of the Bahamas — the same island chain as Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay, about 55 miles northwest of Nassau.

The island is accessible only by Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Unlike the old days when guests had to tender ashore, Norwegian completed a brand new multi-ship pier at the end of 2025 — the first ship to dock was Norwegian Getaway on December 28, 2025. Two ships can now dock simultaneously, and the tendering experience is completely gone.

Norwegian expects to welcome over one million guests to Great Stirrup Cay in 2026 across 15 ships, including the new Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna. This is no longer a hidden gem — it’s becoming one of the premier private island destinations in the Caribbean.

What’s Included Free With Your Cruise Fare

Before getting into the paid upgrades, here’s what every Norwegian guest gets at no extra charge:

Free with your cruise fare:

  • Access to all beaches — multiple stretches of white sand Bahamian beach
  • Great Life Lagoon — the new 1.4-acre heated pool complex with complimentary loungers
  • Splash Harbor — free kids splash pad adjacent to the lagoon
  • Hammock Bay — 50+ hammocks, Tiki-inspired setting, dedicated bar. Opening September 4, 2026 with the waterpark.
  • Tram service around the island
  • Snorkeling right off the beach — bring your own gear or rent at the island
  • Standard dining and snack options

That’s a genuinely impressive free offering — especially the heated Great Life Lagoon, which alone makes Great Stirrup Cay a step above many other private island experiences.

The Great Life Lagoon — The Star of the Show

The Great Life Lagoon is the centerpiece of the new Great Stirrup Cay and the headline attraction that’s already open.

This is a 1.4-acre, 28,000-square-foot heated pool facing the ocean — larger than two Olympic-sized pools combined. The design is resort-style, with a beach-style gradual entry, dedicated swim-up bars for adults, a shallow splash area for kids, and Splash Harbor — a 3,400-square-foot interactive splash pad with water fountains and features for younger guests.

Your onboard Norwegian drink package works at the swim-up bars. Complimentary loungers surround the entire lagoon area. Rentable cabanas and villa-style day retreats are available for groups who want a more private setup.

The heated water is a significant differentiator — unlike Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Lagoon at CocoCay which is unheated and can be chilly in winter months, the Great Life Lagoon is comfortable year-round.

Travel agent tip: The lagoon loungers fill up on busy port days just like any popular pool area. Get off the ship early to secure the best spots. Late afternoon, as guests start heading back, is your second window.

Hammock Bay

One of the most unique additions to Great Stirrup Cay, Hammock Bay is a dedicated relaxation zone with over 50 hammocks strung in a shaded, Tiki-inspired setting with its own bar. This is the spot for guests who want something completely different from the pool or beach scene. Hammocks, shade, a drink in hand, and the sound of the ocean. Opening September 4, 2026 alongside the Great Tides Waterpark. Included free with your cruise fare once open.

Vibe Shore Club — The Adults-Only Experience

The Vibe Shore Club is Great Stirrup Cay’s adults-only beach club — a paid day pass experience for guests 18 and older who want a quieter, more premium atmosphere away from the main island crowds.

What’s included with a Vibe Shore Club pass:

  • Access to a private adults-only beach area
  • Private bar
  • Hanging daybeds
  • Premium lounge seating
  • A genuinely quieter, kid-free environment

Pricing: Day pass pricing is dynamic — check the Norwegian Cruise Planner before your sailing for current rates. Book in advance for the best price.

Is the Vibe Shore Club worth it?

For couples or adults who want a relaxed, crowd-optional experience — yes. The main island areas are excellent but they’re going to be busy on high-capacity sailing days. The Vibe Shore Club gives you an escape. If you’ve sailed Norwegian and enjoyed the Vibe Beach Club onboard, this is the same concept on land.

Silver Cove — The Private Island Within a Private Island

Silver Cove is the most exclusive area on Great Stirrup Cay — a private enclave at the far end of the island that operates as a resort within the resort. Access is through villa rentals, not a day pass, making it a fundamentally different experience from anywhere else on the island.

The Silver Cove villas accommodate between 6 and 16 guests and come with air conditioning, private bathrooms, unobstructed ocean views, and access to the exclusive Silver Cove amenities. Villa types include studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom lagoon villas plus ocean villas.

What Silver Cove guests get:

  • Private infinity pool
  • Private lagoon and beach area
  • Exclusive Silver Cove Restaurant and Bar — upscale buffet dining
  • Private Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar
  • Mandara Spa — massages and treatments bookable for your island day
  • Personalized service and a quieter, more secluded atmosphere

This is the Haven equivalent on land — a private island experience within the private island. For groups of 6 or more splitting the villa cost, the per-person value becomes significantly more reasonable.

Book Silver Cove villas through Norwegian’s shore excursion desk or Cruise Planner well in advance — availability is limited and these sell out on popular sailings.

Great Tides Waterpark — Opening September 4, 2026

This is the big one — and it’s worth planning your sailing around if waterparks are your thing.

The Great Tides Waterpark opens September 4, 2026 and is already generating significant excitement in the cruise industry. Norwegian has described it as spanning the size of several football fields. Here’s what’s coming:

19 waterslides including the Tidal Tower — a multi-slide tower featuring eight slides including two of the tallest on the island.

A dynamic river — Norwegian describes it as “an immersive water experience with an accelerated current that will be faster and more exciting than a typical lazy river.” With tunnels.

Cliffside jumps — an industry first for a private island.

A hidden glowing grotto bar — because Norwegian understands that adults need waterparks too.

Kids attractions — dedicated areas and slides for younger guests.

Booking is live now for sailings that include the Great Tides Waterpark. If this is on your list, book early — it will sell out on high-demand port days just like CocoCay’s Thrill Waterpark does.

Travel agent tip: Watch for Norwegian’s holiday weekend sales — Labor Day, Memorial Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday tend to be when the best discounts on add-ons appear. If you book at full price and a sale comes along, you can cancel and rebook at the lower rate.

Snorkeling and Water Activities

Great Stirrup Cay has always had excellent snorkeling — the water clarity in the Berry Islands is genuinely impressive. The beach areas offer good snorkeling right off the shore, and the island has rentable equipment at the snorkel shack if you don’t bring your own.

Additional water activities available for rent include kayaking, paddleboarding, and various watersports. These are paid experiences — check the Norwegian Cruise Planner or the island activity booths for current pricing.

A note from a safety perspective: When snorkeling or engaging in water activities at any port or private island, stay aware of boat traffic, stay within designated swimming areas, and never snorkel alone. The buddy system applies in the water just as much as it does on land.

Dining at Great Stirrup Cay

The island has standard buffet-style casual dining included with your cruise fare — burgers, grilled items, salads, and typical beach day fare. It’s casual and functional.

The Hammock Bay bar and the Vibe Shore Club bar add drink options throughout the island. Your Norwegian drink package applies at all island bars.

As the expansion continues expect the dining options to expand — NCL has signaled that the resort-style transformation includes food and beverage upgrades as part of the broader vision.

Cabanas and Premium Rentals

Cabanas are available for rent throughout the Great Life Lagoon area and on the beach — accommodating groups of varying sizes. Pricing is dynamic and varies by location and sailing demand.

The villa-style day retreats around the Great Life Lagoon are the premium option — private, shaded, with direct pool access and attendant service.

Book these through the Norwegian Cruise Planner before you board. The best cabana locations go early, especially on sailings with two ships in port simultaneously.

Travel Agent Tips — Getting the Most Out of Great Stirrup Cay

Book the Great Tides Waterpark before you board. It’s already generating significant pre-opening interest. Once it opens late summer 2026 it will sell out on busy port days. Book early through the Norwegian Cruise Planner.

Watch for holiday sale events. Norwegian’s best add-on discounts typically appear around Labor Day, Memorial Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. Set a reminder and check your Cruise Planner — discounts of 20–40% are not unusual.

Get off the ship early. Two ships can now dock at Great Stirrup Cay simultaneously. On those days the island fills up quickly. First two hours after docking are the best time to secure lagoon loungers, hammocks, and good beach spots.

Your drink package works ashore. Norwegian’s beverage packages apply at all Great Stirrup Cay bars — the lagoon swim-up bars, Hammock Bay, Vibe Shore Club. This is one of the best perks of sailing with a package.

Leave valuables on the ship. All you need on the island is your Norwegian keycard. Leave your passport in the cabin safe, leave expensive jewelry and electronics behind. Even on a private island, keep it simple — the less you carry, the more you enjoy.

Check which ships are calling on your sailing date. With 15 ships visiting in 2026, some days will be busier than others. Two-ship days mean more guests and more demand for the popular areas. Your booking confirmation and the Norwegian app will show you what to expect.

My Honest Verdict – Great Stirrup Cay

Great Stirrup Cay has gone from a solid beach day to a genuinely exciting private island destination — and it’s not done yet.

What’s already open — the Great Life Lagoon, Hammock Bay, Vibe Shore Club, Horizon Park, and the new pier — represents a significant leap over the old experience. The heated lagoon alone puts it ahead of many competitors. The no-tender pier makes the arrival seamless.

When Great Tides Waterpark opens late summer 2026, Great Stirrup Cay will be competing directly with CocoCay as the best private island experience in the Bahamas. The 19-slide waterpark with cliffside jumps and a glowing grotto bar is not a minor upgrade — it’s a statement.

For families: Great Stirrup Cay is already excellent and about to get significantly better. If you can time a sailing for after the waterpark opens — do it.

For couples and adults: The Vibe Shore Club combined with Hammock Bay and the lagoon makes for a genuinely relaxed, beautiful day. This is a destination worth choosing a sailing around.

For beach purists: The Bahamian beaches here are real and beautiful. The free experience is excellent. You don’t have to spend a dollar beyond your fare to have a great day.

The transformation NCL has committed to here is real. Great Stirrup Cay is worth the hype — and it’s only going to get better.
